scottish mad cow case confirmed

the uk foods standards agency (fsa) has been notified by the department for environment, food and rural affairs (defra) that a single case of bse has been confirmed in central scotland in a six-year-old cow that was born into a herd which was later accepted into the beef assurance scheme (bas). the animal has not entered the food chain and therefore it poses no threat to food safety, the food standards agency scotland said on wednesday. more

fsa releases report of local food law

on september 25, the uk food standards agency (fsa) published an in-depth audit report on the food law enforcement service provided by telford & wrekin council. overall the service was found to generally comply with the national standard and the authority was keen to achieve continuous improvement in the service they provided to consumers in their area. however, the audit also revealed areas where the authority was not complying with the standard. more

usda revises citrus standards

the us department of agriculture (usda) has revised the united states standards for grades of oranges (texas and states other than florida, california and arizona) and the united states standards for grades of grapefruit (texas and states other than florida, california and arizona). the revisions change the requirements for standard pack and standard sizing for oranges and the requirements for standard pack for grapefruit. more

maff works on labelling standards for frozen vegetables

the japanese ministry of agriculture, forestry & fisheries (maff) has announced that activities preparatory to establishing a quality labelling standard for frozen vegetables will begin in october 2001. the purpose of this standard is to provide accurate information to consumers. people are invited to submit questions and comments on these activities. more

aflatoxins found in curry mixes

high levels of aflatoxins, chemicals that have the potential to cause cancer in humans, have been found in a batch of \"kashmira basar mixed spices for asian curries.\" the uk food standards agency advises against the consumption of food products prepared using the affected batch and has taken action to ensure that it is withdrawn from sale or use. only one batch is affected by this contamination of aflatoxins. more
