iso standard on fat content expanded to sheep and goat’s milk

an iso standard on testing requirements and guidelines for the fat content of milk has been extended to cover sheep and goat’s milk. first developed in 1984, the iso 1211|idf 1 standard provides a test for the fat content of milk and includes guidelines for reporting results. its aim is to ensure that terms related to fat content like skimmed, semi-skimmed, and whole-fat all have a common meaning and that brands are all using equivalent measures. more

roundtable signs off responsible soy standards

new voluntary standards for the responsible production of soy have been agreed by the industry roundtable, and the first certified material from south america is expected to be in the market in 2011. the roundtable on responsible soy (rtrs) adopted the voluntary sustainability standards yesterday (10 june) following field testing of a pilot version in 2009 and 2010 by producer-members of the rtrs in 2009 and 2010. more

usda revises olive oil grade standards

washington—the u. s. department of agriculture’s (usda) revised grade standards for olive oil will go into effect oct. 25, 2010. the revised standards include objective criteria for the various grades of olive oil and olive-pomace oil, including definitions for extra virgin olive oil, virgin olive oil, olive oil, refined olive oil, and olive pomace oil. the revised standards conform to current industry standards commonly accepted in the united states and abroad, and will provide a common language for trade and provide consumers more assurance of the quality of olive oil that they purchase. more

meat plant owner has sentence appeal rejected

the food standards agency has welcomed a decision by the court of appeal to uphold a prison term imposed on yakub moosa yusuf, who ran a company called direct halal meat and poultry, dewsbury. yusuf appeared before leeds crown court in september 2009 and was sentenced to four- and-a-half years, after violating a number of food hygiene regulations dating back to 2004, and then breaching his subsequent bail terms. more

a leading professor has stepped down from his role in a uk government group set up to look at public opinion on gm food in protest over efforts to \"rig\" findings, according to reports. prof brian wynne was vice chairman of a group set up by the food standards agency (fsa) to gauge the public’s thoughts on gm food. however, wynne has resigned from his role in protest at the use of taxpayers\' money to promote \"propaganda\" in favour of genetically modified food, according to the daily telegraph. more
