russia's rosinter sales growth slows in heatwave

same store sales grew 5.8 percent in july year on year, the company said in a statement on wednesday. that compared to a 9.3 percent increase reported for june. "it was not an easy month, many players were unable to fully reap the additional income from summer cafes in the moscow region due to a difficult ecological situation," chief executive sergei beshev said in a statement. the average bill fell 0.2 percent in july, and is down 0.5 percent in the first seven months of the year, although this was compensated by a rise in the number of transactions. people fled the capital city in droves in late july and early august as the worst heatwave on record sparked peat fires that blanketed the city in thick smoke, pushing up pollution levels and making breathing difficult on some days. streets and outdoor cafes were notably empty as those left in moscow preferred to stay indoors. the heatwave -- which has also seen a drought wipe out over a third of russia's crops -- came just as russians were starting to step up spending after a recession-hit 2009. it is expected to wipe off up to 1 percentage point off economic growth this year, although most analysts expect consumers and manufacturers to play catch-up once the weather situation normalises. "ahead of us, we traditionally have the high season and our task is to fully use the growing potential of the market to achieve planned results on revenues and ebitda," beshev said. rosinter, russia's only listed restaurant group, has 357 eateries, owning chains such as planet sushi in russia and in the commonwealth of independent states (cis) and operating the russian franchise of tgi friday's. total sales at rosinter -- which also has a joint venture with britain's whitbread to develop the costa coffee brand in russia -- rose 17.1 percent in the first seven months of 2010, year-on-year, to 5.2 billion roubles ($170.3 million).

new research does not contradict or change the conclusions drawn in the european food safety authority’s opinion on ochratoxin a (ota) in foods such as cocoa products and liquorice, claims the parma-based agency. ota is a mycotoxin produced by several fungal species of the genera penicillium and aspergillus. animal studies have linked the toxin to renal tumors at high dosages.

media reports have suggested that nestlé's leading chocolate brand kit kat is set to become fairtrade certified, in a move that would mirror cadbury’s recent move to fairtrade for its dairy milk chocolate. kitkat is the biggest selling chocolate bar in the uk and it sales in that country have risen 8.6 per cent since the start of the year. certification of the brand would certainly catapult the notion of fairtrade into the minds of chocolate consumers.

there are fears that in the economic crisis consumers will put on “recession pounds” by eating unhealthily. rightly or wrongly, food manufacturers may suffer the blame but “unhealthy” and “recession proof” do not necessarily go hand-in-hand. and as consumers re-evaluate their spending, knowing which products are likely to be hit hardest could help give food companies a competitive edge.
