dubbed the 'largest recall in us history' us poultry processor pilgrim's pride is recalling 27.4 million pounds of cooked sandwich meat, sold under the wampler foods brand - the latest in a series of meat recalls to hit the us. pilgrim's pride pulled 295,000 pounds of turkey and chicken products on 9 october due to fears of listeria monocytogenes contamination, but expanded the recall on 13 october after tests came back positive from the us food safety and inspection service (fsis) for a strain of the potentially fatal bacteria, the company said on sunday. "we are taking these precautionary steps because the safety and health of our consumers is our first concern," said david van hoose, chief executive officer. "we're working diligently with the usda and our customers to make sure any product that has not yet been consumed is removed from the marketplace and consumers' homes as quickly as possible." the wampler cooked deli products were sold to consumers in retail groceries, delicatessens and foodservice distributors under the wampler foods and select private labels. " we want consumers to be aware of the recall because of the potential for foodborne illness," said dr garry l. mckee, fsis administrator on sunday. "diners may also wish to ask if their meals contain the recalled products." today's recall, an expansion of the 9 october recall of 295,000 pounds of turkey and chicken products, is the result of fsis' continuing scientific investigation into the cause of illnesses, deaths and miscarriages in the northeast from listeria monocytogenes. fsis said in a statement that it has been working continuously since early september with other federal and state public health agencies in an attempt to discover the source of the listeria illnesses in the northeast. as part of that effort, fsis' microbial outbreaks and special projects branch (mospb) laboratory in athens, georgia has conducted more than 400 tests on products that the agency regulates. the news will do little to allay food safety fears that exist in the minds of consumers and, bearing in mind the evidence, concerns that the situation will get progressively worse may well be valid.

speed is essential for pinpointing the source of food contamination and saving lives, according to a new study examining the 2008 salmonella outbreak caused by mexican peppers, but first linked to us tomatoes. epidemiologists from the centers for disease control and prevention (cdc), writing in the new england journal of medicine , said that better traceability, better understanding of how foods become contaminated on farms, and continued exploration of alternative hypotheses during an outbreak are necessary to reduce the impact of such occurrences in the future.

the us federal government has introduced new standards on salmonella and campylobacter in poultry with the aim of eliminating 65,000 foodborne illnesses a year. the new inspection rules, which refer to young chickens and turkeys, require companies to reduce the percentage of samples testing positive for a given pathogen to a certain level. they are the first such standards to be introduced for campylobacter, and the first revision to the salmonella standards for chicken since 1996 and for turkeys since the first standards were set in 2005.

the usda’s food safety and inspection service (fsis) is seeking comment on proposed measures to enhance food safety. the proposed rule would implement a provision of the 2008 farm bill and is a priority for the food safety working group (fswg). "one year ago the president called on government to do more to ensure our food is safe, and we are working aggressively every day to improve the food safety system in the united states," said agriculture secretary tom vilsack.
